Winter 2012 Programs

STRAW BASKET WEAVING WORKSHOP (ADULTS)

Coiled straw baskets are traditionally used for holding rising bread dough, for laundry baskets, and in beekeeping (skeps and swarm-catchers). We will use a roadside grass or rush to make small bowls, using skep-making techniques. Charlie will show us a collection of coiled grass baskets that he has made, and we will visit the Basketry Plant Garden at MAGC to see many plants useful to weavers. Bring a pocket knife, garden pruners, a 2–5 gal water bucket, and lunch. Instructor: Charles Kennard.

GREEN NEEDLECRAFT/FASHION DESIGN (GRADES 1-5)

This program will allow interested students to learn a variety of basic skills including knitting, sewing, fabric painting & dyeing, embroidery and felting. They will utilize a wide assortment of materials, including many natural and recycled materials, and will be able to create scarves, tote bags or purses, hats, dolls, pillows and other wearable or decorative items.  They will also be prepared to refresh or re-make existing items by reassembling or embellishing them, using many of the skills they have learned over the course of this class.  The session will culminate in a brief “fashion show”, exhibit and demonstration for family and friends.

STORIES & ART (AGES 2.5 – 4 with parent/caretaker)

This “Mommy & Me” class will provide young children with the opportunity to spend time enjoying a wonderful story and then to use their imaginations to create art projects inspired by the stories they’ve heard.  Stories will range from rhyming tales to fantastic adventure stories. These will serve as inspiration for projects using paper, oil pastels, stamps and stickers, fabric paint, beads, scissors, glue and more.  Besides exercising their imaginations, children will also develop their ability to focus, practice their hand/eye and small muscle coordination and learn some basic skills that will allow them to express themselves in new ways.  It should also, importantly, be great fun.

2.5 – 4 yr. with parent/caretaker

Thurs. 1/19 – 2/23

9:15 – 10 am

$120 per child
